Retail Masterclass
Get listed at Pick n Pay, Checkers, Dis-Chem and more.
A live workshop on retail trading agreements, plus an hour with a retail buyer.
Small group, practical, built for businesses targeting South African retail.
You’ll know what retail will cost you and what buyers look for before you walk into a meeting.
The wrong deal can sink a brand with a good product
Founders don’t lose in retail because the product isn’t good enough. They lose because of terms they didn’t understand.
60 days becomes up to 120
A “60-day” payment term that stretches.
15%+ taken off
Deducted from invoices before rebates.
R100,000
For a short first delivery on a new listing.
R10,000
Per barcode or master data error.
You usually find out after you’ve signed. This workshop means you find out first.
Part 1: three hours inside real trading agreements
We open real supplier agreements and rate cards from major South African retailers and go through them line by line. You’ll see how a retail deal is built, what each clause costs you and where the money leaves your business, before you sit across from a buyer.
Front-end margin vs trading terms
Two costs, stacked. We build your price from ex-factory to shelf, and compare typical trading terms across the big four, SPAR, Makro and forecourts.
The rebate stack
Base and growth rebates, new-store fees, category management and rewards-platform fees. We separate fixed charges from performance-triggered ones, and show how terms are renegotiated each year, then back-dated.
SWEL decoded
Stock Write-Off Liability looks small on paper. We work through a real invoice to show who benefits when waste is low, who pays when it’s high, and why opting out can cost you more.
Service levels, strike rates and sanctions
The delivery targets in the agreement, what happens when you miss them, why promotions are where a shortfall hurts most, and how sanctions can be applied retroactively.
Exit stock and the opening-order trap
What happens to product that doesn’t sell, who carries the markdown, and why a big opening order isn’t always good news.
The operational rules that hit your costs
Shelf-life at delivery, pallet rental, audits and certification, insurance and product liability, and when risk actually passes to the retailer.
Is the listing profitable?
We build your true per-unit profit with every deduction counted, then cover which retailer to approach first and how to position your product so a buyer says yes.
You’ll leave able to:
- Read a retailer’s supplier agreement and spot the clauses that cost you money
- Know your real margin after every deduction
- Avoid the costly mistakes that sink first-time suppliers
- Walk into a buyer meeting knowing what to ask for and what to push back on
A good product gets you a meeting. Understanding the terms is what keeps you in business.
Part 2: one hour with a retail buyer
An experienced buyer with 20+ years at a major South African retailer.
Buyers decide what gets listed, not “the retailer”. In this live Q&A, you put your questions straight to someone who has sat on the other side of the table and made real listing decisions.
This is insight most brands never get.
